About Gerald Bubis

Gerald Bubis has served as a Jewish communal professional, an academic and a volunteer board member and/or officer in countless local, national and international organizations over the past 50 years.

Prior to going into academia he served as a resident and day camp director, functioned as a draft counselor, and established services for the elderly in Jewish Community Centers and the Jewish Federation as an executive.

His activities as a citizen include being involved in the Soviet Jewry movement and continue today through his Jewish Agency positions. His involvement in the Israeli peace movement, a country he has visited more than 40 times, spans nearly four decades. Before and since his retirement from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion as Founding Director of the School of Jewish Communal Service, he has been called upon as a speaker, consultant and researcher throughout North America, Europe, parts of South America and Israel. As a trainer and educator Jerry has worked with nearly 2,000 staff people throughout the world.

From his early career to the present, he first published articles on practice issues which confronted him, later expanding his concerns to a variety of subjects including the Jewish family, practice in various Jewish settings, Jewish identity, Jewish governance in voluntary organizations and Israel-Diaspora relations.

His most recent book, The Director Had a Heart Attack and the President Resigned, provides helpful tools and exercises for professional staff and lay-board relations. Growing Jews: Selected Writings by Professor Gerald B. Bubis, reflects a selection of 50 articles from among dozens written over the decades. Among the books he wrote or edited are: Serving the Jewish Family, Synagogue Havorot, Saving the Jewish Family, Board-Staff Relations, Serving the Jewish Polity, The Director Had a Heart Attack and the President Resigned: Board-Staff Relations for the 21st Century, From Predictability to Chaos??
